Cranach the Elder, Lucas (1472-1533 Wittenberg) Germany St Anne

1510 Attribution by dr. M.J. Friedlander: M. Onnes of Nijenrode,

Breukelen.

Lucas Cranach the Elder was a famous painter and a contemporary of Albrecht Dürer. The woman whom he portrayed in 1510 has been identified as Saint Anne, but this identification is rather problematic. Anne’s typical outfit consists of a red robe and a green cloak, but Cranach mixed up the colours. In her right hand she’s holding cherries, known as the ’fruit of paradise’, and symbols of heaven. Anne was the mother of Mary, and hence Jesus’ grandmother. She married three times, to Joachim, to Cleophas and to Salomas; she had a daughter by each husband, and each was named ’Mary’.
