Mans portrait (Or a Nuremberg patrician) 1550
Hans Muelich (or Mielich) was an artist who painted mostly portraits. He was born in Munich in 1516, travelled to Rome, and died in 1573 in the city of his birth. The person depicted is said to be a patrician. He can easily be identified as a wealthy man by his fur cloak and by the mere fact that he could afford to have his portrait painted. Apart from this, nothing can be said about him. There are no inscriptions on the panel stating his name, no coat of arms by which we could identify his family. Even the note that he holds in his hands contains no further clues for us. The piece of cloth lying on the man’s lap is probably a sort of cap that people in the sixteenth century wore under their hats. The two knobs on the chair reflect what seems to be a window, and indeed that is what the person portrayed is sitting at, for we see the sky and clouds behind him.
