Panel

Florentine painting
St Stephen 1350 (Influence of Bernardo Daddi and Giovanni da Milano)
The frame is not original. The panel was originally lower, and was perhaps part of an altarpiece.
The man, or rather the boy we see here is Saint Stephen. He was stoned to death for his Christian beliefs, and came to be known as the first martyr of the Christian church. On this panel, however, he looks a picture of health, and nothing hints at his violent death. His clothes are expensive, richly decorated with pearls; his hair is neatly styled, though it does look somewhat strange, as if it were a hat. Saint Stephen carries a book, because, in his time, he was renowned for his passionate preaching. The panel has not always been as high as it now: the seam above the portrayed boys head gives an indication of its former smaller size. Both the width and the height may have been adjusted, for the ornamentation in the right half of the halo surrounding Stephens head stops rather abruptly.
