St Dominic 1447-1450

Part of a predella. Attribution to Nicolas of Tolentino (Tuscan school) by Prof. H. van Os, 1988 From the Ramboux collection, Cologne.

Saint Dominic carries a lily, symbol of purity. And indeed he doesn’t look like someone who goes in for slap-up meals and fine wines. However, born the son of a wealthy Spanish family around 1170, Dominic was destined to lead a life of luxury. He decided to do otherwise, studied theology, and became a very devout man. He is best known for the order of friars that he founded, appropriately called the Dominican order. The clothes which the portrayed founder wears are typical of his order. The sun-like face he holds between his thumb and forefinger is a star. It is said that, when Dominic was baptized, a star appeared on his forehead, lighting up the whole world. The background of the portrait is made of gold leaf. The ornamentation on the large stucco circle surrounding the saints body, and the ornamentation of the halo surrounding his head, was made by pressing stamps on the gold leaf background.
