The theme of Christ and his disciples, of whom only three can be seen here, may well have served as an excuse for painting a beautiful Flemish landscape. As flanks of the scene we can see the tree on the right side, with beautifully detailed leaves, and at the other end the house to the left. Next to the house a neighbouring house or barn is being built and in front of the house we see a pigeon-loft on a pole. Through the middle a river is winding its way, and far away, at the edge of this river, we see a city or stronghold. The painter may have intended to express a stay of Jesus outside Jerusalem, on one of his travels through Judea.
The initials LVC have led to the attribution of the panel to Lucas of Gassel, about whom we know little more than that he was Flemish and lived around the middle of the sixteenth century.

Mogelijk deel van een serie
Het thema ‘Christus en zijn discipelen’, van welke twaalf er overigens slechts drie zijn afgebeeld, was voor de kunstenaar misschien niet veel meer dan een excuus om een mooi Vlaams landschap te schilderen. Als coulissen die ons de voorstelling inleiden fungeren de boom rechts, met prachtig fijn geschilderde bladeren, en het huis helemaal links. Naast deze woning is een stal of buurhuis in aanbouw en ervoor staat een duiventil op een hoge paal. Door het midden van de afbeelding slingert zich een rivier, waarmee de kunstenaar meer diepte in het schilderij bracht; aan de oever ervan zien we in de verte een stad of burcht liggen. Wellicht probeert de schilder hiermee de tegenstelling tussen het stedelijke en het plattelandsleven tot uitdrukking te brengen. De initialen LVC die helemaal onderin zijn aangebracht hebben geleid tot de toeschrijving van het werk aan Lucas Gassel. Over de kunstenaar is echter niet veel meer met zekerheid te zeggen dan dat hij Zuid-Nederlands of Vlaams geweest moet
