Continuation of the 14th Fructidor, Year III Today appeared Louis Dulken, harpsichord maker, residing at No. 32, rue Martin et du Figuier, who stated that he stands surety for Citizen Dulken, his wife, toward Citizen Bouvet for the sum of five thousand nine hundred and four livres, as set forth in the judgment of the 2nd of the current [month], and has signed: Louis Dulcken

The date 14 Fructidor Year III in the French Republican Calendar corresponds exactly to Monday, August 31, 1795. 

Louis Dulcken au 32 rue du figuier à Paris en 1795 
 
Selon un acte notarié du 14 fructidor de l’an III (31 août 1795) (réf. Archives de Paris D3B6 95), Louis Dulcken demeurait au 32 rue du figuier. Nous avons recherché l’emplacement actuel de cette adresse.  
Cette rue existe toujours, dans le quartier du Marais. S’y trouve l’Hôtel des archevêques de Sens, dit “hôtel de Sens”, construit de 1475 à 1519. Au XVIIe siècle il est loué à des particuliers. En 1689 il abrite une compagnie de transports par coches et carrosses, jusqu’en 1743. L’hôtel est alors très délabré. A la révolution il devient bien national. Diverses entreprises s’y établiront pendant le XIXème siècle: blanchisserie, fabrique de conserves alimentaires, opticien, confiturerie, verrerie, etc. 
Le système de numérotation des adresses en 1795 était différent du système actuel. Le numéro 32 n’existe pas sur le plan actuel, qui n’en compte que 21, mais il a pu correspondre à une des échoppes ou un des ateliers situés dans ou devant l’hôtel de Sens. De nos jours, il ne reste dans cette courte rue (116 m. de long) qu’un autre bâtiment antérieur au XXème siècle. Il correspond aux numéros 15, 17, 19 et 21, et date de 1789 (site www.bercail.com/paris). 
En conclusion, s’il n’a pas été possible de localiser exactement le 32 rue du figuier, il est très probable que l’atelier de Louis Dulcken était soit dans ou devant l’hôtel de Sens, soit à proximité, la rue étant courte. 
Les deux illustrations suivantes montrent l’hôtel de Sens et la rue du Figuier, en 1833 et 1839. Leur aspect n’avait vraisemblablement pas beaucoup changé depuis l’époque de Louis Dulcken. 

In conclusion, whilst it has not been possible to pinpoint the exact location of 32 Rue du Figuier, it is highly likely that Louis Dulcken’s workshop was either inside or in front of the Hôtel de Sens, or in the immediate vicinity, as the street is short.
The following two illustrations show the Hôtel de Sens and Rue du Figuier in 1833 and 1839. Their appearance had probably not changed much since Louis Dulcken’s time.

Louis Dulcken at 32 Rue du Figuier in Paris in 1795

According to a notarial deed dated 14 Fructidor, Year III (31 August 1795) (ref. Paris Archives D3B6 95), Louis Dulcken was living at 32 Rue du Figuier. We have researched the current location of this address.
This street still exists, in the Marais district. It is home to the Hôtel des Archevêques de Sens, known as the ‘Hôtel de Sens’, built between 1475 and 1519. In the 17th century, it was let to private individuals. In 1689, it housed a coach and carriage transport company, which remained there until 1743. By then, the building was in a state of serious disrepair. During the Revolution, it became national property. Various businesses set up there during the 19th century: a laundry, a food canning factory, an optician’s, a jam factory, a glassworks, etc.
The address numbering system in 1795 differed from the current one. Number 32 does not appear on the current map, which lists only 21 addresses, but it may have corresponded to one of the shops or workshops located within or in front of the Hôtel de Sens. Nowadays, only one other building dating from before the 20th century remains on this short street (116 metres long). It corresponds to numbers 15, 17, 19 and 21, and dates from 1789 (site www.bercail.com/paris).

Volgens een notariële akte van 14 fructidor van het jaar III (31 augustus 1795) (ref. Archief van Parijs D3B6 95) woonde Louis Dulcken op Rue du Figuier 32. We hebben de huidige locatie van dit adres opgezocht.

Deze straat bestaat nog steeds, in de wijk Le Marais. Daar staat het Hôtel des archevêques de Sens, ook wel “hôtel de Sens” genoemd, gebouwd tussen 1475 en 1519. In de 17e eeuw werd het verhuurd aan particulieren. In 1689 huisvestte het een vervoersbedrijf met koetsen en rijtuigen, tot 1743. Het hotel was toen erg vervallen. Tijdens de revolutie werd het nationaal bezit. In de 19e eeuw vestigden zich er diverse bedrijven: een wasserij, een conservenfabriek, een opticien, een jamfabriek, een glasfabriek, enz.

Het huisnummeringssysteem in 1795 was anders dan het huidige systeem. Het nummer 32 bestaat niet op de huidige plattegrond, die er slechts 21 telt, maar het kan hebben betrekking gehad op een van de kraampjes of een van de werkplaatsen in of voor het Hôtel de Sens. Tegenwoordig staat er in deze korte straat (116 m lang) nog maar één ander gebouw dat van vóór de 20e eeuw dateert. Het komt overeen met de nummers 15, 17, 19 en 21, en dateert uit 1789 (site www.bercail.com/paris). 


Concluderend kan worden gesteld dat, hoewel het niet mogelijk was om de exacte locatie van de Rue du Figuier 32 te achterhalen, het zeer waarschijnlijk is dat het atelier van Louis Dulcken zich ofwel in of voor het Hôtel de Sens bevond, ofwel in de directe omgeving, aangezien de straat kort is.

De volgende twee afbeeldingen tonen het Hôtel de Sens en de Rue du Figuier, in 1833 en 1839. Hun uiterlijk was sinds de tijd van Louis Dulcken waarschijnlijk niet veel veranderd.
