DULCKEN ( DULKEN), Johan Lodewijk (an Louis or Louis)
Harpsichord and organ builder in Amsterdam (c. 1760) and elsewhere; son of the well known Johan Daniël Dülcken in Antwerp (See Curtis 49, Boalch 38).
Add. inf.: Curtis' supposition that this member of a prominent family of instrumentmakers was also a harpsichord maker «although there is no evidence of the Dulckens having made harpsichords in Amsterdam», appears to be correct. I have written about J. L. Dülcken elsewhere,181 but I will repeat it here: On January 27, 1755, «Jan Louis Dulken van De Leur» (province of North-Brabant) became a member of the Reformed Church of Amsterdam. He lived in the Nieuwstraat. In the betrothal registers for May 7, 1756, we find «Johan Lodewijk Dulken van Mastrigt, gereformeert, oud 22 jaar, in de Nieuwstraat, geassisteerd met zijn vader Daniël Dulken te Antwerpen en Catrina Koning etc.» The bridegroom signed: «Johan Lodewijk Dülcken». Thus Dülcken was born in Maastricht in 1733/34. According to Curtis he was baptized there on April 15, 1736 (a very long time between birth and baptism, even for calvinists).
Several of his children were born in Amsterdam; the name of the mother is always written in the same way; the name of the father is «Louis» in 1757 and 1758, but in 1761 «J. L. Dulcken»182
From 1756 until 1760 he advertised very often in the Amsterdamsche Courant; mostly as «Louis Dulcken, Mr. orgel - en clavecimbaalmaker», sometimes only as organ builder. A survey: 1756 no. 59: «een staart-clavecimbaal met lang klavier, zynde een veritabel Hans Ruckers»; 1756 no. 103: «een staert-clavecimbaal van Andreas Ruckers met 3 registers en lang clavier»; 1756 no. 145: his «royal» cabinet organ and another harpsichord; (1757 no. 54; 1758 nos. 99, 133; 1759 no. 45: cabinet organs made by him); his last advertisement of November 18, 1760, is the most interesting concerning harpsichords: «Louis Dulcken, Mr. orgel- en clavecimbaalmaker, wonende bezyden het Cathuyserskerkhof t' Amsterdam, presenteerd te koop eenige staartclavecim baals van zyn eigen werk, zo dubbelde met 4 registers en s octaaf, als enkele met 3 registers en lang clavier onder andere een extra kleyn comodieus startstukje met 2 registers, edog lang clavier etc.; alle dagen te zien...» (two-manual and one-manual harpsichords made by himself were offered for sale in this advertisement). Louis Dulcken left Amsterdam some time after August 9, 1761, when his son and namesake was baptized. In the Middelburgse Courant for August 17, 1765, he advertised that «J. L. Dulcken, Mr. orgel-en clavecimbaalmaker» had arrived in Middelburg with two «magnifique cimbaals».
His wife, Catrina Koning, remained in Amsterdam (after a divorce?) and moved in 1766 to Hoorn. Curtis wrote: «The elder Jan Lodewijk may also have left Amsterdam, for we find a Louis Dulcken as a piano maker in Paris on the rue Vieille-du-Temple in 1783 and on the rue Mauconseil in 1788-89. But an identification of Louis with Jan Lodewijk (Jan Louis) is mere speculation» I am of the opinion that Curtis' supposition and speculation were both correct.
Corr.: Boalch (p. 38) needs some corrections: I. Dulcken no. s (Louis) is the same as Dulcken no. 3 Johan Lodewijk the Elder); 2. The father J. L. the Elder did not remain in Amsterdam to teach his son the craft of instrument making. (For further information about these and other Dulckens in Amsterdam and for the text of the advertisement see Gierveld 119-121, 383-385, and 415.)

Catharina Koning ( de verkeerde dus) ging in maart 1766 in ondertrouw. ( zie afb)
Ze trouwde met Jan Houvast .
Op 18 juni wordt ze ingeschreven in het kerkelijke register als lid

DULKEN, Johannes van
Harpsichord maker from Antwerp who married in Scheveningen Sara Brull from «Gulpen by Mastricht» on November 29, 1772.183 The couple drew up a will on May 21, 1775, in which the husband is called a «clavercingelmaker» 184 Their daughter Suzanna Maria Sara van Dulcken was baptized on May 21, 1775.185 The name of the child is an indication that her father was also a son of the harpsichord maker Johan Daniël Dulcken, whose wife's name was Suzanna Maria Knoppffel. The little girl was thus probably named after both her grandmother and her mother. Johannes van Dulcken died very soon as a result of «kramp», only 36 years old. His death was registered at The Hague on July 22, 1775.186
